Denim Goes Upscale With These Chic Summer Dresses

I’m aware that the idea of a denim dress sounds like a rejected fad from the 80s not worthy of reviving, or something horrendous your mother used to dress you up in for Picture Day at school… but this season’s denim dresses are nothing to scoff at! Chambray, stretch denim, and a variety of light and dark washes makes the material more versatile than ever for a slew of different dress styles, from body-con and bustier to even cowled-neck and cocktail! Chic details like sweet ruffles and exposed zippers make the look anything but dated and transform the traditionally casual fabric to something unexpectedly upscale!

I love the versatility of this Anlo Ruffle Neck Dress, available at Nordstrom — its ability to be easily dressed up or down, depending on the use of some strategic summer accessories, make it the perfect summer buy. It would be the perfect dress to rock at a 4th of July barbecue with a pair of cork wedges! For a sexier night-out look, the Nanette Lepore Bell Dive Dress hugs the body in all the right ways and adds visual interest with an exposed zipper down the front. Whether casual or dressy, this season’s dresses are bound to change your perception of denim!

Alexander Wang Glam Collection

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Alexander Wang is famous for his edgy and seemingly masculine women’s wear. The New York Fashion Week highlights his fashion shows are usually met with great compliments. His creations and designs elicits casual, cool and contemporary styles. He gets inspiration from the fashion of the Eighties with a touch of rock and French designs.

The Alexander Wang Khaki Corset Dress, for example, conveys utmost elegance with its underwire cups, rope accents and tubing. This sleeveless jersey dress has a draped, asymmetrical envelope hem and an exposed side drip. Another darling is the  Slinky One Shoulder dress, which features a draped overlay at the front and an asymmetrical cowl neck. This graceful jersey dress has a vertical elastic strap at its asymmetrical open back and an asymmetrical hem and hidden zip. Meanwhile, Edita Thong Platform Sandals can stylishly complete your ensemble as their leather soles, 1.5” stacked platform and a 5” stacked heel are slipped on.

Many celebrities were already drawn to the charms of the Alexander Wang collection. Rihanna is apparently one of them when she was seen at the Pepsi Super Bowl Fan Jam in Miami Beach.  Cassie was also seen sporting an Alexander Wang when she attended the White Party hosted by Ashton Kutcher and Sean Diddy Combs in Beverly Hills. In addition,  Nicole Scherzinger wore an Asymetrical Georgette Dress when she went to Singapore on September 27th. Other celebrities, such as Demi Lovato, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Christina Aguilera, Lindsay Lohan and Blake Lively, have also shown their preference to the Alexander Wang collection.

Nicole Richie turns hats into handbags

Photo from fOTOGLIF

The reality TV star – who is currently promoting her House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate autumn/winter 2010/11 fashion ranges – says she often gets inspired by seeing what other people are wearing and then giving items her own unique twist.

She said: “I was walking around the other day and I saw this woman wearing this great hat and I thought actually that’d make a really good bag so we turned it upside down and now it’s a great looking bag.”

Nicole – who has two children, Harlow, two, and nine-month-old Sparrow with fiance Joel Madden – also revealed she has had to alter her dress sense since becoming a mother to make it practical yet still stylish.

She told vogue.com: “I’m a busy working mother. I’m all for what’s comfortable but I don’t think people today make enough effort with what they wear. At the same time I don’t want to have to get out of bed early to decide what to put on. My jackets are my favourite part of my collection because you can just throw one on over jeans and a vest and it looks like you’ve made an effort.”

VMA Fashion Report

The big news on the Red Carpet outside Sunday night’s MTV Video Movie Awards was legs! Whether it was the warm weather, or just the relative fashion freedom of MTV’s red carpet compared to the more formal, old school red carpets like the Academy Awards’, there were lots of legs on display Sunday evening. In keeping with the VMA’s younger, more carefree vibe, stars like Katy Perry, Kristin Stewart, and Scarlett Johansson looked fantastic in their short dresses. Here’s a rundown of some of the best.

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Scarlett Johansson wore a D&G frock made of green lace over a black underlay. I never would have guessed just how lovely it looked on her. The strapless sweetheart neckline and the thin black belt at the waist were perfect for the occasion, as was her (blonde again!) hair worn loose. She might have glammed up the footwear a tad, but the sexy plain black pumps she wore did not detract from her look.

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Some fashion critics may disagree, but Lindsay Lohan made the most of the fashion constraints forced on her by Judge Marsha Revel: her SCRAM ankle bracelet. Rather than blinging out the device (which could have gotten her into big trouble), Lohan took this sartorial lemon and made lemonade, wearing a very low-cut sparkling pantsuit with flowing wide legs to hide it. With her hair long and loose, her look was reminiscent of Cher, circa 1975, when she was at her peak of fabulosity.

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Kristen Stewart kept it simple, short, and sexy, in a gold-on-black strappy top and glittering black mini skirt, married with a just-right wide belt. Accented with a pair of killer black platform shoes and her hair in a simple ponytail (which, admittedly, could have been neater), she looked like herself, and clearly had a great time, up to and including her acceptance of the Best Kiss award which she and Robert Pattinson accepted together.

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Vanessa Hudgens wore an amazing pair of silver pumps, but her dress was just a tad too “baby doll” even for the MTV crowd (and even though she has great legs). The same dress with a slightly more sophisticated cut would have been perfect. The shoes, however, almost made up for it.

Photo from fOTOGLIF

And it would be totally remiss to not mention Katy Perry’s amazingly sexy mini dress, accented with cobalt blue hair and bright yellow nails. She was a combination of Betty Boop and Veronica of the Archie Comics, but guess what? On Perry, it totally worked. She’s riding high on a big tide of fame and popularity this year, and if ever the time was right to go all out, Sunday night’s VMAs were it. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Supposedly there were men in attendance at the VMAs too, but with all the great legs, cleavage, and sparkle going on, they might as well have been invisible. Zac Efron looked awfully cute in his preppy suit and white shirt, but he’s pretty enough to be an honorary girl anyway.

Dennis Hopper’s friends, loved-ones and co-stars have been paying tribute to the late actor

Photo from fOTOGLIF

The Hollywood legend – who passed away yesterday (29.05.10) aged 74, due to complications caused by his prostate cancer – has been praised by numerous celebrities friends who are keen to pay their respects to the screen star. Dennis’ ‘Easy Rider’ co-star Peter Fonda – who he also wrote the Oscar-nominated script with – admits he was “blessed” to know him.

He said: “Dennis introduced me to the world of Pop Art and ‘lost’ films. We rode the highways of America and changed the way movies were made in Hollywood. I was blessed by his passion and friendship.”Dennis’ ‘Hoosiers’ co-star Gene Hackman admits he also felt privileged to work with the late star. He said: “As an actor, one is always taken by someone who is different. An iconoclast, Dennis was an artist and I will always treasure having worked with him. He will be missed.”

Isabella Rossellini, who starred alongside Dennis in ‘Blue Velvet’, has revealed she was shocked by the late actor’s kindness.

She said: “When I first met Dennis on the set of ‘Blue Velvet’, he had just come out of rehab. I was afraid of him, but Dennis turned out to be infinitely kind, compassionate and understanding. He had gone to hell and came back from it with great wisdom. It will take me a while to realise and accept he isn’t with us any longer.”

Former Guns N’ Roses rocker Slash was also quick to take to his twitter page in honour of the film star – who was also known for appearing in ‘Apocalypse Now’ and ‘Rebel Without a Cause’, as well as directing several movies. He tweeted: “You take the great ones for granted until they’re gone. RIP Dennis Hopper.”

Actress Christina Applegate also wrote: “Sweet Dennis Hopper. Bless you for your gifts you gave us all these years.”

The actor was surrounded by family and friends for his final moments and dozens of bouquets of flowers are being left at his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Juliette Binoche has admitted that growing older is liberating

Photo from fOTOGLIF

The 46-year-old actress thinks she is more honest in the choices she makes because she is no longer restricted by her past.

She said: “There’s something that happens in the woman when they reach a certain age. You let go of certain things. You lose some illusions. Your choices become your own choices and less the consequence of your education or your fears or preconceptions. You’ve been broken so much that it becomes a kind of liberation.

“Who cares what I do any more? So what if I decide I want to do a dance show at the age of 43? Why not?”

Despite making herself to focus of her decisions now, Juliette has previously admitted she became an actress because she wanted to be loved by others.

She said: “When I started as an actress, I wanted to please so much. I think we all need to be loved. When we fail, we are very, very hurt and behave in such a way that nobody is going to love us. There’s a moment when you are jumping into the trust and you don’t know if you will be loved or not.

“You’ve got to dare to allow for not being loved – if you don’t dare that, you are not an artist.”

Lady Gaga picked up a bar tab for an entire Birmingham pub

Photo from fOTOGLIF

The ‘Alejandro’ singer – who is currently back in the UK for the second time on her ‘Monster Ball’ tour – went to The Prince of Wales pub on Wednesday (26.05.10), and treated locals to a round of drinks and left a huge tip at the bar.

A source inside the pub told the Sun newspaper: “Everyone was stunned when this striking blond came in. Most of the blokes had no idea who she was at first.

“She sat at the bar with a pal for two hours, downing spirits and scribbling notes. She told the locals how much she was enjoying having a drink on a day off because she can’t handle drinking before a show. “She signed autographs for staff and left a huge tip – a few hundred pounds.”

The 24-year-old took to twitter to talk about her time in the pub, and confessed she was writing a new song there.

She wrote: “In a Pub in England, ruining bar napkins with lyrics and memories. Dreams are never weak like we are, drunk or sober.(sic)” Recently Lady Gaga confessed she had written a brand new song while in Liverpool.

Writing on her fan site Gagadaily.com, she said: “I’ve already written the first single for the new album and I promise you, that this album is the greatest of my career. It is the anthem for our generation.

“I wrote for you because of you, when I was in Liverpool, I wrote the greatest music I’ve ever written.”

Clint Eastwood has “become tired” of seeing himself on the big screen

Photo from fOTOGLIF

The actor-and-director – who will turn 80 on May 31st – prefers to stay behind the camera and allow younger stars to take center stage, but insists he has no plans to quit acting altogether.

He said: “I leave that to younger actors now. I’m not a prize fighter who has to capture another victory. Since I worked as a director for the first time on ‘Play Misty for Me’ in 1970 I’ve become tired of seeing myself on the big screen.

“That doesn’t mean I’m going to stop acting, though” The ‘Million Dollar Baby’ star is still determined to try new things, and believes directing films gives him more opportunities to push himself.

He told Germany’s Tele 5 TV station: “If you’ve done as many films as I have you stop looking back, you’re only going forwards.

“As a director it’s important to me to try new things once in a while. And as an actor, if a film is finished you can’t change it and you
have to leave it to other people to judge your work.”

Scarlett Johansson hates doing household chores

Photo from fOTOGLIF

The actress – who is married to ‘X Men’ star Ryan Reynolds – admitted that she’s not a fan of doing work around the house and hinted that she even leaves some domestic tasks to her spouse.

She said: “I wouldn’t say that cleaning is something I like to do, or ironing. I can’t remember the last time I ironed, actually.

“Does anybody actually iron any more? Men iron more than women these days.” However, while she hates cleaning, the ‘Iron Man 2’ star loves nothing more than creating new culinary treats.

She explained: “I love acto cook and bake, I love to be domestic in that way because you know what goes into the food you eat.

“I like cooking alone – I find it very therapeutic. I put on some music, maybe have a glass of wine and make something like a turkey Bolognese or a nice frittata.”

Leona Lewis was mortified when she accidentally flashed her underawear

Photo from fOTOGLIF

The ‘Bleeding Love’ singer was in the middle of a performance which included some wind machines and admits they were a little too powerful for her liking.

She said:”I was singing in front of some wind machines when my dress just blew up! I was only wearing a little pair of knickers, so it was really
embarrassing. The wind machines were meant to be blowing my hair, so how did it get up my dress? I was like, ‘Are you doing that on purpose?’ “Everyone pretended they didn’t see, but I know they did.” Although she was embarrassed about showing her underwear, Leona recently admitted she finds skinny dipping “liberating”.

The ‘Happy’ hitmaker admitted she and her friends once stripped off and jumped into a swimming pool during a holiday to Portugal in order to cheer up one of their other pals.

She said: “I was with some girlfriends in Portugal. One of my friends was going through a hard time with her boyfriend, so we thought let’s do
something crazy. It was liberating.”

Chris Rock wants to star in a Guy Ritchie film

Photo from fOTOGLIF

The US comedian – who is currently promoting his latest film ‘Death at a Funeral’ – admits he was supposed to appear in ‘Revolver’ as Avi but lost out at the last minute to Outkast singer Andre 3000.

Chris told BANG Showbiz: “I’m a fan of Guy Ritchie. ‘Snatch’ and ‘Lock, Stock’… I was supposed to be in ‘Revolver’ and then I saw one day that it was Andre 3000. I had the meeting. Maybe I was too expensive. Maybe I’ll be in his next one.”

Discussing his favourite film from the last year, the 45-year-old star admits ‘Avatar’ rates highly.

He said: “My favorite movie of this year? The last 12 months? I think ‘Avatar’ was pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty freaking good. And ‘(500)
Days of Summer’. That really spoke to me. ‘Precious’ was funny. That was a knee-slapper that ‘Precious’.”

Shopbop Explains The Lingerie Trend

If I were to win the lottery tomorrow and selected a large amount of cash to spend on clothes, I’d probably go to Shopbop to add way more clothes and accessories to my closet. It makes sense because most of my online window shopping time is spent there. Not only do they have an amazing selection of brands, you can search by your personal style, and they have some amazing editorial content that rivals any fashion magazine out there. Have I done enough gushing yet?

Anyway, their editorials are a great way to study how you can wear the clothes they sell. A trend that I’ve been wanting to try is the lingerie look where corsets, bras, and everything feminine are revealed instead of covered up. Focus on colors like ivory, blush pink and soft blues. The trick is to look for cutouts and lace insets like the Melanie Dress by Rebecca Minkoff. Another way to try the trend without being too literal is going sleek and off shoulder with the Rosette OneShoulder Top by Tibi. Tousle your hair, smudge some eyeliner and you’re ready to drop some jaws!

Maxi Dresses are still riding high

ADAM – Basket Weave Long Dress – $375

As a new season approaches, the maxi dress is still riding high in the style stakes although this time block colours are in and tribal prints are out. The shape of the dress is still as popular as ever as it can hide a multitude of sins, but in order to look up-to-date choose a colour which suits your skintone and hair colour and wear it head-to-toe for a truly stunning look.

The maxi can be worn casually in the day, or it can be jazzed up for an evening look by adding accessories including an exquisite clutch bag or oversized jewellery. While the dress can hide any parts of the body you’re self-conscious of, if you’re happy to show off your figure, add a belt in a contrasting color to highlight your waist. If wearing the maxi during the day team with a pair of flat sandals -lace-up Gladiators are going to be huge – or wear with a stylish pair of wedges to give it a more elegant feel. As ever there is a style to suit all shapes and sizes and a price range for all budgets. Stars to have embraced the block colour maxi include Girls Aloud beauty Sarah Harding and ‘Glee’ star Dianna Agron.

Liza Minnelli’s new jewelry line

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Liza Minnelli is to launch her own fashion range. The ‘Cabaret’ star has teamed up with the Home Shopping Network to create a limited line of clothing and jewelery, called The Liza Collection, and it will take inspiration from her own wardrobe. She said: “My life has provided me the ability to amass a wonderful wardrobe designed by fashion’s brightest stars. I am excited to work with HSN in launching The Liza Collection and to have the opportunity to share my favourite looks with millions of women who want to look fabulous and feel their very best.”

The range will feature a lot of sequins and baubles and will debut next month. It includes apparel and jewellery, all recreated from her own unique style. Along with her signature sequined separates, The Liza Collection incorporates a sequined boyfriend blazer at $129.90 and silver-tone triple heart pave drop earrings for $39.95. The exclusive collection is available on the Home Shopping Network and hsn.com.

The 64-year-old star – who makes a cameo appearance in ‘Sex and the City 2? – is known for refusing to follow the latest trends and dresses in whatever feels right for her.

Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Marc Jacobs wanted to get rid of Louis Vuitton’s monogram print. The designer – who is now the creative director of the fashion house – wasn’t keen on the company’s famous logo when he started there 12 years ago but soon realised it would be a mistake to lose it from the collections.

He said: “When I arrived at Louis Vuitton 12 years ago, and I was figuring out how to create a new tier of Vuitton for a different customer, I thought it would be clever to hide that monogram. which was very stupid of me. That logo is part of what makes the Vuitton so desirable. It allows people to become members of an aspirational club.” Although there are many fake Louis Vuitton bags around, Jacobs is confident the label will always remain desirable as consumers know its quality.

He told The Times newspaper: “The real Vuitton will always be about a level of quality and attention to detail that makes it aspirational. It’s about display and when that gets out of control it’s a disaster, but in moderation, it’s lovely. You can either be ashamed of having pride in your appearance or you can relish it in an intelligent way.”

Gisele Bundchen wasn’t always popular with fashion magazine editors

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Gisele Bundchen wasn’t always popular with fashion magazine editors, according to Mario Testino. The Brazilian beauty is now the world’s highest earning model but when she first started out the legendary photographer admits her appearance didn’t wow many in the industry.

He said: “It was, ‘Uh, no, the nose, the waist, the breasts.’ They saw problems everywhere. A year later, everyone wanted her.” Over his career, Mario has shot some of the world’s most famous people – including Kate Moss and the late Princess Diana – but admits his images haven’t always gone down well.

Speaking at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Testino – who describes himself as “part psychologist, and part magician” – said: “I’ve been criticized for pretty, smiley photographs, but at least someone is happy! In my mind, I am always giving the image to the sitter.”

Testino – whose clients also include Burberry, Lancome and Britain’s Royal Family – also said he has no desire to stop working in the near future as he needs to fund his extravagant lifestyle. He said: “I can’t just have one fabulous thing, I need a hundred. That’s why I am always working.”

Sarah Jessica Parker will present an award to Alexander McQueen

Photo from fOTOGLIF

Sarah Jessica Parker will present the posthumous Special Tribute Award to Alexander McQueen at the Council of Fashion Designers America (CFDA) Awards on June 7.

The ‘Sex and the City 2? actress will award the prize to the British designer – who committed suicide in February – as a special tribute to his
work.  The pair famously walked the red carpet together at the Costume Institute Gala in 2006 in matching tartan outfits. Commenting on his death at the time, Sarah Jessica said some of the designer’s work was “jaw-dropping”.  She said: “He was talented well beyond his years and the seriousness and unrivalled talent which he applied to his work is in bountiful display year after year and collection after collection.

“Every single inspired, original, lofty, whimsical, stunning, brilliant and jaw-dropping detail was Alexander McQueen.” Author Caroline Kennedy will present the Eleanor Lambert Award to US Vogue fashion editor Tonne Goodman, who has previously exclaimed her pleasure at receiving the prize.

She said: “It’s lovely to be recognized for something that you love as much as we do – I have loved my job and my work and the people that I’ve worked with.”

Pass The Bubbly Please

Ah. The New Year is upon us – where did the time go? One more reason to celebrate with friends and loved ones, and one more reason to dress up and look fabulous. I’m sure you have all found your dresses already but I just passed by the store window of BCBG the other day. BCBG has always attracted me, there is something simple and ethereal about their dresses, and their cutting (for me at least, is superb).

Their dresses make you feel almost old hollywood glam or simply modern chic. I know they’re rather simple, definitely something you’ve seen before, but talk about excellent draping! I don’t know, there’s something about them that makes me fall in love.

Love the velvet bodice of this dress!

This dress is actually much more beautiful in person.

Aughhh…I need to get this – look at that sleeve detail!

So simple, so lovely (especially the colour). Hm, I will advise you not to wear a headband that the model demonstrates…

Ok, kind of generic I know, princess cut blah blah blah. But the material! And a colour that would look great on all skin tones.

What are you doing for New Year’s? &equally important, what will you be wearing?
